Home Improvement Return – Maintaining a Quality House

By Albert Bruce

Home improvement return is not always monetary, but also shows in a quality structure and living environment for you and your family which benefits you for the years you spend there. This is the biggest intangible return that is taken for granted that needs to be considered. If you put money and effort into your home, you want to be able to enjoy it at least for awhile.

After paying on a home year after year you expect some sort of return at some point, it may even be your children or others that benefit after you are gone. At the time of this writing, one wonders if values will ever return, but I am figuring at some point they will. Maybe you were hoping to move elsewhere and now you’ve got to sit tight. You have realized you need to work with what you got.

Irregardless of you home’s age, at some point you need to keep the place together, If you let things go, you’ve got to get to them before problems get bigger. As I have mentioned in other articles and it is a basic to remember, water is a home’s biggest enemy, especially exterior roof runoff and drainage, along with siding, trim and keeping it caulked and painted. Keep this up.

Ceiling Medallions, Crown Molding, and Ceiling Domes: 3 Ways to Add Elegance and Beauty to Any Room

By Patricia Tomaskovic

I want to draw attention to your ceiling. Take a look at it. Ceilings are an often neglected area of the room when it comes time to redecorate (or repair). There are so many things that you can do too, that are inexpensive, yet provide the simple elegance that speaks to your style. Choose decorative ceiling medallions, crown molding, ceiling domes, rosettes, or panel molding, just to name a few. Three of my favorite ways to accent a ceiling: ceiling medallions, ceiling domes, and crown molding.

One of the easiest and least time-consuming projects is the installation of a ceiling medallion. Although in the past they were made from plaster, today these decorative ornaments are made of lightweight polyurethane foam. This makes them much easier to handle. Ceiling medallions are used to draw attention to chandeliers and light fixtures, or to enhance crown molding. They can also be combined with a rosette and used to decorate an otherwise plain ceiling. You can use these architectural ornaments as wall decorations. Use several small ones in the hallway. Ceiling medallions are versatile and come in many styles and sizes. They can be painted to match any room. Ceiling medallions are one of the most popular architectural details.

Adding Space to Your Bathroom

By Sarah Hampton

Imagine a house, a dream house, the one with big rooms and wonderful accents. The living room is perfect, the kitchen is magnificent, the dining room is sublime. Details of the house are superb. Imagine a house with all the amazing designs and fine quality materials. Then someone in your home had the need of a bathroom, but there was none! You can see how important a bathroom is at that point. In fact, it is an integral part of the house.

Most people today consider the bathroom to must have a very good atmosphere. The size of the bathroom however depends on the size of the house. It is somehow parallel. When you have a big house, you can spare a big room for the bathroom. Otherwise, when your house is not that big, then your bathroom follows to have a limited space. This is what we call balance and proportion.

Families have a tendency to grow. When the couple first started, everything seems to be spacious and large. When the kids came and grew (parents always say they grow fast) everything would seem to shrink, even the bathroom. Renovating the whole house for the sake of the bathroom would be impractical. If you renovate the bathroom, it would sometimes also be difficult not to affect another part of your house. This is costly and sometimes impractical.

To solve this problem, one just have to do some initiatives. Adjustments can be made. For example, changing the color of your bathroom will help create the impression that the room grew bigger. It will give your bathroom an illusion of more space. There are many more ways to help your space up your bathroom, just like using wall mount bathroom sinks.

One way would be changing your space consuming sinks to space saving wall mount bathroom sinks. Not only will it create an illusion of a bigger bathroom, but it will also help maximize the space you have. Moreover, it will help in making your bathroom more organized and neat.

Apartments and condominiums often use these wall mount bathroom sinks due to space limitations. They are also very attractive to look at therefore add to the beauty of the room. There are many wall mount bathroom sinks out on the market; however, the best choice would be the stone sinks. Stone sinks can match any color suitable for your bathroom. Again, colors can either make your bathroom look big or small.

One variety for wall mount bathroom sinks are stone sinks. These come in different sizes and shapes. They also have different and pretty designs. They are better compared to brass, stainless steels and other types of sink since the neutrality of the stone sinks can match any color of your bathroom.

Let’s admit it, you really cannot add space to your bathroom especially if your house is limited on space without going through extensive renovations. But what you can do is get that illusion of space. This is why people often prefer wall mount bathroom sinks over any other varieties available.

Sarah Hampton has worked in interior design for ten years, decorating houses in California, Nevada, and Virginia. She enjoys the details of using the perfect fixtures to finish off the look of a residence. Her advice on topics such as wall mount bathroom sinks and stone sinks has been appreciated all over the country. To find out more information, please visit signaturehardware.com.

DIY Solar Panels – They Reduce Your Energy Bill and Your Carbon Footprint

By Marly Kester

Whether your house is well fit for a DIY solar system depends on four elements:

Hours of Sunshine

The number of DIY solar panels that you would need depends on the amount of sunshine your area receives. On the site of the National Renewable Energy Lab you can find a map which is showing you how much electricity (in kilowatt per hour) one square meter your south facing DIY Solar Panels can generate. This is essential information to determine the number of panels you need to generate sufficient electricity for your daily need.

South-Facing Roof Area

Your DIY solar panels should be facing south. Do you have sufficient roof space available to install a solar system? You would need a south facing roof area of 8 to 10 m2 (86 to 105 ft2) per kilowatt of installed solar panel power. As a typical household requires a 3kW system, you would need a south facing roof space available of 24-30 m2 (250 to 315 ft2).

Many people assume that DIY solar panels have to be placed on roof tops. That´s certainly not true! They can be placed on the ground as well as long as they are south facing.

Is your home made solar system directed towards the sun?

Trees and nearby houses often are obstacles that hinder the sunlight to reach your solar panels. Unobstructed sunlight is important, especially between 12 and 4pm when the sun provides most of its energy. Take this into consideration when planning for a right position of your DIY Solar Panels.

The structure of your roof

Besides its high price, branded solar panels (for example those of Sanyo or Sharp) often have another disadvantage. Together with their installation brackets, they are too heavy. As these manufacturers have to guarantee the panels for a lifetime of 25 years, the construction of the panels itself, but especially their supportive structure, has to be very sturdy. A panel together with their heavy metal mounting brackets can weigh up to 20 kilos. As you would need about 23 solar panels for a 3kW system, the total weight of the panels and brackets could total 400 kilos. Can your roof support this? There are not many roofs which can hold this kind of weight without additional bracing. The substantial cost of these alterations to your house together with the high cost of branded systems, make a professionally installed solar system often not economically feasible.

Due to the simplified and lighter wooden structure of DIY Solar Panels these additional roof enforcements are not required, and therefore financially justifying the use of DIY Solar Panels versus professionally installed panels even more.

When your roof is facing south, you can install your DIY solar panels on the roof without difficulty. Is your roof is not south facing you would need some brackets though to be able to turn your panels towards the sun.

You might think that you aren´t capable of making and installing these panels. But I think you are. Making these DIY Solar Panels is not too difficult. If you read the testimonials of people that have made their own solar panels, many acknowledge that it´s very doable, especially with the help of existing DIY Solar Panels manuals. Some of those guides are really great!! We reviewed a couple of them and the best ones are really high-quality with excellent step-by-step instructions and even supportive video material.
