Is There More to Choosing Crown Moulding Than Meets the Eye

By Jason Stalcup

When it comes to personal taste there is no right or wrong, only what we as an individual find pleasing. When it comes to your home this is not always true. For instance, if you are planning a home renovation or home improvement project that involves decorative moulding there are rights and wrongs. There are interior moldings that can accent a room and tie your living space together and then there are moldings that can cause your house to seem disproportionate and ill-conceived. If you plan on reselling your house the latter is definitely a wrong decision.

Crown moulding installation is a relatively simple home improvement that can ad value and enjoyment to any home. Just about anybody can hang trim, but it’s choosing the right style of decorative moulding that fits both your personal style and the style of your house that is the real trick. Choosing the wrong trim for your home or sloppy installation could result in a home that looks awkward and gaudy. I would suggest visiting your local interior moulding design center for suggestions and guidance on choosing the interior accents that are right for you. Interior moulding centers usually have thousands of molding profiles to choose from and you may even find that their professional installation services are more affordable than doing the work yourself and risking the chance for mismatched cuts and excess waste.

By Patricia Tomaskovic

Decorative molding includes all of the kinds of trim used in a home. It can serve a purely decorative function, or it can also be used to hide any unfinished edges of a wall. Moldings can be made of wood-most usually of pine or oak-or, as is used frequently today, polyurethane. Polyurethane is a lightweight, long-lasting, durable alternative to wood. Molding can also be painted or stained.

What to Consider when Buying Crown Molding

By Mark J. Donovan

If you are planning a crown molding installation project there are several items that you should consider when buying crown molding.

Buying Crown Molding and Selecting the Appropriate Wood Species

When buying crown molding you first need to decide on what type of wood to use. Softwoods, such as Pine, are easy to work with, relatively inexpensive, and are available in a variety of crown molding profiles. The downside with pine is that it is soft, and thus can easily be dented, though sitting up high on a wall mitigates this issue. Softwood crown molding is also less stable and thus more susceptible to contracting and splitting with changes in temperature and humidity. Hardwoods, such as oak, on the other hand are more impervious to becoming dented and are more stable. However, they are more expensive.

Tips on Installing Crown Molding

By FastSubmitArticles.com

The ceiling is one of the most important area in the house. Why? The next time you have guests coming to your house, observe where they look at when they first step in your house. Chances are, they will look towards to ceiling first to get an overall feel of the house before resting their eyes on the details.

As you know, the most common problem with ceilings is that they are often too bare. No designs, no nothing. Just a plain coat of paint. Homeowners who recognize this problem are looking at different ways to make their ceilings look more interesting and exciting. One way to do so, is to install crown molding (or cornices). If you like, you can also install decorative medallions on the ceiling. Here are some tips on how you can install your own crown molding.

Ceiling Medallions, Crown Molding, and Ceiling Domes: 3 Ways to Add Elegance and Beauty to Any Room

By Patricia Tomaskovic

I want to draw attention to your ceiling. Take a look at it. Ceilings are an often neglected area of the room when it comes time to redecorate (or repair). There are so many things that you can do too, that are inexpensive, yet provide the simple elegance that speaks to your style. Choose decorative ceiling medallions, crown molding, ceiling domes, rosettes, or panel molding, just to name a few. Three of my favorite ways to accent a ceiling: ceiling medallions, ceiling domes, and crown molding.

One of the easiest and least time-consuming projects is the installation of a ceiling medallion. Although in the past they were made from plaster, today these decorative ornaments are made of lightweight polyurethane foam. This makes them much easier to handle. Ceiling medallions are used to draw attention to chandeliers and light fixtures, or to enhance crown molding. They can also be combined with a rosette and used to decorate an otherwise plain ceiling. You can use these architectural ornaments as wall decorations. Use several small ones in the hallway. Ceiling medallions are versatile and come in many styles and sizes. They can be painted to match any room. Ceiling medallions are one of the most popular architectural details.

Start by creating a measuring template for marking the distance down the wall where to make the installation.
