Why Oil Filled Radiator Heaters Are Most Preferred Over Electric Or Propane Heaters

By Klara Rowan

An oil-filled radiator heater can become quite an asset to your home as cold weather sets in. Somehow, you always forget about the drafty areas of your home when it is 70 degrees and sunny outside. But let those subzero temperatures start along with a kicking wind and suddenly you remember.

What is an Oil Filled Radiator Heater?

Unlike portable electric heaters that radiate heat then use a fan to blow the heat in a directed area, an oil-filled heater has oil that is stored inside of a sealed compartment of coils and fins. The heat works by convection and the warm air generated floats up without any type of fan. Advanced models have a timer function that lets you set the unit 30 minutes before you get out of bed so it does not operate all night.

Making a Rain Barrel

By Michael Bowater

Making a rain barrel has got so many advantages over just going to the store and purchasing one. There are a few important things you need to know first though.

Firstly, the use of rain barrels is not only great for the environment but also great for your garden. Every drop of rain water that you collect from your roof and store in a rain barrel for your garden is a drop of water that doesn’t have to come from your local water reservoir. Your garden will also benefit from the rain water that you store especially if you grow vegetables as it’s well known that rain water doesn’t contain additives and contaminants as water from your garden tap often does.

Home Improvement Return – Maintaining a Quality House

By Albert Bruce

Home improvement return is not always monetary, but also shows in a quality structure and living environment for you and your family which benefits you for the years you spend there. This is the biggest intangible return that is taken for granted that needs to be considered. If you put money and effort into your home, you want to be able to enjoy it at least for awhile.

After paying on a home year after year you expect some sort of return at some point, it may even be your children or others that benefit after you are gone. At the time of this writing, one wonders if values will ever return, but I am figuring at some point they will. Maybe you were hoping to move elsewhere and now you’ve got to sit tight. You have realized you need to work with what you got.

Irregardless of you home’s age, at some point you need to keep the place together, If you let things go, you’ve got to get to them before problems get bigger. As I have mentioned in other articles and it is a basic to remember, water is a home’s biggest enemy, especially exterior roof runoff and drainage, along with siding, trim and keeping it caulked and painted. Keep this up.

Recommendations Are No Guarantee

By Raleigh Durham Kitchen Cabinets

So you have a contractor for your kitchen cabinet renovations that has been recommended by a friend, family, or you read about them on web services. This means you are guaranteed good service…right? Not necessarily. In the world of home service professionals nothing is for certain. You could go through all of the right steps in searching for a contractor and hire a contractor that everyone recommends….and still end up unsatisfied.

For instance, a member of our staff had received a recommendation for an HVAC repair contractor from an acquaintance. The contractor, lets call him Dave, seemed like a good guy and gave our staff member an unbelievable price on some air conditioning work he needed. His price and service were both great. Our staff member used him several other times over the course of a year. One job even involved a new installation, priced at several thousand dollars. Each time our staff member was happy with the price and service. He recommended Dave to several friends.

However, several months later our staff member learned that Dave had botched a job at one of his friend’s homes, and even took an up-front payment and never returned to perform the work. He later learned that another job Dave had performed was not completed and, again, Dave had taken money and disappeared. Finally, he discovered that Dave was not licensed to perform heat and air conditioning repairs and was operating under a false license number.

What happened with this situation? Well, our staff member later learned that Dave was filing for bankruptcy (another reason to be cautious of super low estimates…is the company making enough money to stay in business?). He was most likely trying to get as much money in as short of an amount of time to help with his personal financial situation. Also, he learned that Dave was moving to another state. This helps to explain how he blatantly had no regard for his customer’s feelings…he was not going to be in business long and knew it.

The story above goes to show how contractors can change over the course of time. Likewise, larger companies can hire new management or hire inexperienced labor that can affect the way the customers are satisfied with the company. Contractor’s customer satisfaction can change because of any of these situations.

How can you help avoid hiring the wrong contractor, despite the fact that they have excellent references?

  • Ask for license and insurance information.
  • Call the references and ask when the contractor performed their service….if there are no recent customers that should tell you something.
  • Ask the contractor for their last 3 customer’s contact information vs. the referral list they may supply.
  • Super low estimates should raise concern.
  • Companies asking for entire payments upfront should raise concern.
  • Verify address and contact information for the kitchen cabinet renovation company you hire.

Is There More to Choosing Crown Moulding Than Meets the Eye

By Jason Stalcup

When it comes to personal taste there is no right or wrong, only what we as an individual find pleasing. When it comes to your home this is not always true. For instance, if you are planning a home renovation or home improvement project that involves decorative moulding there are rights and wrongs. There are interior moldings that can accent a room and tie your living space together and then there are moldings that can cause your house to seem disproportionate and ill-conceived. If you plan on reselling your house the latter is definitely a wrong decision.

Crown moulding installation is a relatively simple home improvement that can ad value and enjoyment to any home. Just about anybody can hang trim, but it’s choosing the right style of decorative moulding that fits both your personal style and the style of your house that is the real trick. Choosing the wrong trim for your home or sloppy installation could result in a home that looks awkward and gaudy. I would suggest visiting your local interior moulding design center for suggestions and guidance on choosing the interior accents that are right for you. Interior moulding centers usually have thousands of molding profiles to choose from and you may even find that their professional installation services are more affordable than doing the work yourself and risking the chance for mismatched cuts and excess waste.

Renovating the Right Way

By DB Wilson

With the prevalence of do-it-yourself renovation shows available for daytime viewing these days, there are a large number of home owners who think that they can take that home that they’re looking to sell or their newly bought home and renovate them without incident quite easily. While it is true that many of the home renovation shows do seem to bring together their renovations mostly without incident, it is important to realise that in most cases the people who’re organizing and planning the renovations are highly experienced professionals and that creative editing can allow a television show to gloss over any problems that the crew had with the project.

The biggest key to successful renovation is making a plan. Don’t assume that you can just draw out a plan and be done with it, however. It’s best to consult with a contractor or home designer who has experience with the kind of renovations that you want to accomplish. You can decide with the help of someone who knows the business which aspect of the job that you can do yourself and which ones are best left up to the professionals. Things that will require code adherence, like electrical and plumbing, may be best left to the people who know those aspects best.
